Earlier this year I ran some sessions for languages teachers who work independently - they covered some of the thorniest issues I’ve come across when running my teaching business. The teaching bit is easy - it’s all the other stuff that’s hard! And these are the points I covered in the sessions.
Marketing
When I first started my business teaching French, I just didn’t know where to start with marketing. I didn’t know where to find clients to teach. It was all very much trial and error.
So I learned about marketing and selling and developed my business over several years and now I have a successful business teaching French to over 80 people each week.
Social Media
Learn how you can manage your social media - what to post, when to post, how to schedule your posts - learn from my experiences of advertising my teaching business on social media.
Mindset
For me this is key - you can learn marketing, you can learn how to do social media posts, you can learn new ways of teaching - but what happens when things don’t go to plan? How do you deal with that? I’ve done a lot of work on my mindset and here I share some of my best tips to help you get through the hard times.
Time
I wasn’t sure how to manage my time in my business - I didn’t want to be working all the hours to earn less than when I was full time employed.
So l learned how to prioritise, to work smarter not harder.
And you can do all of these things too - you don’t have to learn by trial and error, learn from my experiences. I’ve made all the mistakes so you don’t have to.
I’m Barbara Allen and I’ve been running my own business teaching French for over a decade. I started from scratch, advertising on Gumtree, getting work through tutoring agencies. Then I set up, developed and run my own group classes. Now I run 8 classes and do one to one tutoring for GCSE and A level. I also run the Grab & Go website and use my experience to mentor fellow languages teachers who want to run their own businesses teaching languages.
