Over on our Facebook page we’re sharing some Teaching Tips each week and we thought it would be a great idea to bring it to our website. The ideas we share are taken from our own practice and we would love to hear from you - have you used any of our ideas, do you have any of your own that you would like to share? Drop us an email at theteam@grabandgolanguageresources.co.uk and let us know.

If you feel that you’re not ready to sign up to our newsletter or our Resource Centre, but like what we have here, why not consider buying us a coffee? We would be so grateful.

  • Teaching Tip 1

Almost all of my learners at every level feel that they forget the ‘little’ words and that this holds up their spontaneity when speaking. I love using Conti’s Disappearing Words activity to work on this and regularly weave these into lessons to extend tasks or to use as starters or exit tasks. It is such an easy-to-prep and effective activity to build automaticity.

  • Teaching Tip 2

I love using Conti's Mosaic Translation to highlight patterns in the structures that we are working. Using colour and highlighters can really draw out these patterns and create a great basis for modelling.

There are several examples of Mosaics in our Resource Centre & our Shop - this set of worksheets for intermediate/A level learners is great to revise the theme of pollution

  • Worked Well Wednesday 3

The Fast & Furious activity is designed to encourage learners to repeat orally (and also in a written form if you prefer) structures that they are working on following lots of input activities with the aim of building automaticity.

  • Teaching Tip 4

Reading out loud is so important for learners. It requires more effort than reading silently and not only focuses learners on the meaning of what they are reading but on how they are saying the phrases – pronunciation, liaisons, silent sounds, rise and fall... . I also find that many of my learners self-correct to reread a sentence differently to ensure that how they say the sentence contributes to conveying the meaning of the sentence – suggesting a deeper understanding of what is being read.

Spot the Difference is a really great way to encourage learners to listen intently and focus on specific vocab, a specific tense, a time phrase, numbers, times, dates - anything we are currently working on or I think we could recycle.

Like almost all of the activities we share, Battleships works brilliantly with learners of all ages and levels and it is a fantastic activity to focus on structures that you are working on. I love it for practising tenses - and so do my learners!

Aural Sentence Scramble is just like a normal sentence scramble but instead of reading, the learners listen to you reading the sentences all scrambled up and they have to jot the words down in the correct order & it can be quite tricky!

Oral Ping Pong is usually done in pairs, and encourages learners to practise what they have been working in a highly organised and structured way. I usually develop the ping pongs from a passage that we have already worked on
